Emergency Shelter Services
WE OFFER PROGRAMS AND SOLUTIONS
The McKinney-Vento Act of 2001, ensures educational rights and protections for children and youth experiencing homelessness. The Emergency Shelter is extremely fortunate that the Berrien County ISD is managing the grant which funds the classroom within the Shelter itself. The Learning Center provides an educational home like environment as well as tutoring and school liaison services.
The Lead Teacher for the Learning Center is also responsible for assuring children have transportation to and from their own school. The McKinney Vento-Act specifies that children have the right to remain in their own school when they become homeless.
The Learning Center has one lead instructor and two Foster Grandparents.
The Connection is the fruition of grassroots efforts to implement the Housing Resource Network's 10 year plan to end homelessness in Berrien county. Housed on Riverview Drive in Benton Harbor, this program of Emergency Shelter Services is a one stop shop for help when housing is threatened or just for referrals and information. Your Connections to The Connection - A Program of Emergency Shelter Services Individual & Family Services, Non-Profit.
