For
centuries people have recognized the beauty and bounty of the area
where the St. Joseph River meets Lake Michigan. The Potawatomi and
Miami nations called it home. The French explorer La Salle built
Fort Miami and for many years Native Americans and Europeans traded
here. In time, the "twin cities" of St. Joseph and Benton
Harbor prospered through agriculture and industry on these shores.
Later, vacationers from Chicago and other nearby cities flocked
to enjoy the area's natural beauty.
Since 1965 the Heritage Museum and Cultural Center.
has kept this exciting story alive by researching, preserving and
sharing the cultural history of the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph region
with the public. Visit our facility to learn more about Michigan's
lake frontier through changing exhibits, library and archival collections,
and special programs.
